‘Squid Game’ actor faces trial

Oh Young-soo, the actor who played Oh Il-nam in Squid Game, has been held in trial for indecent assault this past week.

He has been regarded as one of the best stage actors in South Korea, appearing in more than 200 productions since 1968. After his appearance in Squid Game in 2021, Oh skyrocketed to international fame and became the first South Korean to win the 79th Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Supporting Role.

After a woman accused him of inappropriate touching in 2017, he has been facing fallout. Though the district judge in Suwon has yet to convict Oh, if what the victim says proves true, he may be subjected to a $12,000 fine or 10 years in prison.

“I don’t know how I feel about supporting Oh Young-soo’s acting career after hearing about the assault case,” Joshua Hwang (11), Squid Game fanatic, said. “I just thought of the man as this innocent, old guy, but surely that’s not the case. I just think this comes to show how deceiving the media world can be. I hope the court righteously decides on what punishment Oh Young-soo should face.”
