Despite reaching mediocre ratings on SBS with one of its most recent episodes, scoring a 3.4 percent viewer rate nationally, My Demon is ranked second on Netflix’s Global Top Ten List as of Dec. 3. This blooming romance between a snobby CEO and a vulnerable demon has been the center of attention since its release on Nov. 24.
The storyline of this global sensation follows the main leads Jeong Gu-won, a demon played by actor Song Kang, and a driven yet snobby heiress, Do Do-hee, played by Kim Yoo-jung. The two characters become intertwined due to Gu-won’s powers being transferred to Do-hee, along with Do-hee’s need for a bodyguard after multiple near-death experiences with a mysterious killer.
“The name of the demon is Gu-won, which means ‘savior’ in Korean, so I believe the character is inherently good,” said Chloe Yoon (10), fan of the new series. “I’m looking forward to all of the plot twists to come, because every episode is getting left on big cliffhangers.”
With only six episodes released, the show is already garnering fans, both inside and outside Korea. My Demon is in the top 10 for popular shows in Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, and more. The speculations and theories of each upcoming episode arising not even halfway through the show is a call to its success among fans.
“I believe this is a big step in furthering both of the actors’ careers, but especially Song Kang’s, since this is a very different genre to what he has starred in the past,” said Ellen Park (10), avid watcher of K-Dramas. “From a horror genre like Sweet Home to a regular romance like Love Alarm to such a romantic, comedic, yet fantastical genre like My Demon shows his versatility as an actor.”
