Fubao, the cherished panda born and raised in Everland amusement park, is being prepared to return to China as her fourth birthday is just around the corner.
Born on July 20, 2020, Fubao was the offspring of her parents, Ai Bao and Le Bao. The two parents were gifts from Chinese President, Xi Jinping, to Korea in 2016, symbolizing the friendship between the two countries. However, in adherence to conservation protocols, pandas loaned to overseas countries must return to their homeland before reaching the age of four. The news of Fubao’s upcoming departure has attracted the attention of Koreans across the nation.
“Every time I scroll on social media these days, specifically Instagram, I always see videos and pictures of Fubao,” Sijeong (11), Fubao-fan, said. “It’s really sad to see her go back to China because I’ve grown somewhat attached without even meeting her in Everland. I wish she could stay.”
On March 3, a heartwarming scene took place as thousands of people gathered to attend the special farewell event for Fubao. Among the crowd were devoted fans who had been waiting in line since 5:30 a.m. to wish the panda goodbye.
Reflecting on their bond, zoo keeper Kang Cher-won, who has cared for Fubao since birth, expressed his gratitude for the love and affection Fubao has provided him with.
“Fu Bao is a friend who has played many roles,” Kang said. “She was my first panda cub, and my heart is filled with memories of her that I will never forget all my life.”
