On Aug. 27, several K-pop idols, including Aespa, NewJeans, and 2NE1, found themselves at the center of controversy after attending Kanye West’s concert. The idols’ attendance quickly sparked backlash, with many fans and SIS students questioning the groups’ decision to publicly support the rapper, who’s been subject to many controversies regarding his actions.
Kanye West has become a polarizing figure in the music industry due to a series of his scandalous statements and actions in recent years. His public comments include statements about race, religion, and politics, which called for boycotts against his music.
Numerous fans and SIS students voiced their concerns over the various artists’ decision to support West, as West’s statements were not only controversial, but also hurtful to his fanbase.
“Although Kanye’s reputation is undeniably complex with many controversies, such as his past antisemitic comments, I still love him and his music,” Isaac Lee (12), attendee of Kanye West concert, said. “His recent listening festival, which later turned into a concert, drew many fans and K-pop idols, such as New Jeans and Aespa. While their presence in his concert did receive some backlash, his legacy and fame were the reasons for their attendance, rather than their support for his views.”
However, amidst the criticism, some students believe that the idols can attend the concert simply to enjoy the music without necessarily supporting West’s actions.
“I’m a fan of Kanye West’s music, so I can say firsthand that just because you like someone’s music, you don’t have to support their actions,” Ben Lee (10), avid Kanye West and K-Pop listener, said. “I personally believe that it is important for people to separate artists from their music.”
The divide in opinions reflects heavily on the relationship between celebrities and fans. In the meantime, the K-pop idols involved have yet to comment on the matter.
