Dikembe Mutombo, a NBA basketball player who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015, passed away on Sept. 30 due to brain cancer. This was at the age of 58, two years after his diagnosis.
Despite arriving at Georgetown University as an international student aspiring to be a doctor, Mutombo became a professional basketball player with a towering presence.
Mutombo was often regarded as the best defensive basketball player in the NBA during his career, famous for his iconic finger wag celebration on blocks during games. He also was an eight-time All-Star and a four-time Defensive Player of the Year during his 18-season NBA career, which spanned from 1991 to 2009.
Mutombo didn’t only make his presence felt on the court. His humanitarian efforts were also spotted throughout his career, donating to enhance the public health of Congo.
Many players and fans have spoken about the passing of Mutombo, stating how his presence was large on and off the basketball court. His death has caused many to mourn and send sincere gratitude, remembering Mutombo.
“I feel sad that such a great player like Mutombo passed away,” Jason Kang (10), an NBA fan, said. “Mutombo should be remembered for his career and kindheartedness.”
