The preseasons for the 2024-’25 NBA season have begun, and they have shown some interesting developments, including their first-ever father-son duo: Lebron James, and his son, Lebron James Jr., also known as Bronny James.
“It is fascinating that [Lebron James] can play professionally for as long as he has,” Timothy Munro, varsity basketball coach, said. “To say he gets to play with his son is more incredible than that his son is also an NBA player. Not only is he still in the NBA, but he is still dominant.”
Lebron James, at the age of 39, has been in the league for over two decades now and is still putting up impressive numbers, averaging 27.8 points per game with a field goal percentage of 56.6 percent. He claims the highest points per game in his age category of 39, ahead of basketball stars such as Michael Jordan who only averaged 20 points.
While Lebron’s dominance in the league is undisputed, the controversy surrounding this topic mainly focuses on Bronny’s performance during the preseason. Bronny has played six preseason games, averaging around 15 minutes per game, 4.2 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 0.3 assists per game.
“I saw an article yesterday saying that Bronny has the second-worst plus-minus [in-game stats] over three games,” Mr. Munro said. “He hasn’t done anything at the professional rank. I would be astounded if he was on the roster and did not start the year as a G-League player. So far, I do not think he has shown a performance that puts him on an NBA floor in a regular season.”
Reports have speculated that Bronny will most likely not play in the regular season and instead move down to the G-League, the official minor league for the NBA. Bronny may not play any games with his father if he moves to the G-League. Lebron did not play any preseason games this year for medical reasons.
“I think it is cool to have a team with a father and his son in the NBA,” Chris Ahn, NBA fan, said. “People will definitely follow either them as supporters or skeptical critics. The problem is that [Bronny James’s] performance during the preseason so far is quite bad. I want to hope that Bronny will start to adapt and get better stats, but that might be too optimistic.”
