After Kim Jong Un threatened to cut off all South Korean influence, North Korea detonated parts of two major roads connecting the two countries. The explosion happened on Oct. 15th, only six days after the announcement. Parts of the Gyeongui and Donghae line that traverse the North Korean peninsula exploded.
The explosion was spotted by a South Korean CCTV on Tuesday afternoon. According to the observations made in South Korea, two areas of Gyeongui and Donghae roads near the line of demarcation were destroyed.
The Gyeongui line and Donghae line, both stretching from South Korea to North Korea, were established even before the division between North and South Korea. Akin to the liaison office in Kaesong that North Korea detonated a few years ago, the two major roads signify peace and connection within the Korean Peninsula.
“I don’t think it was rational for North Korea to be hostile,” Alinea Lee, political enthusiast, said. “There are so many unpredictable things that can happen between the two countries now.”
North Korea, in addition to exploding the two roads, is building a wall near the border to achieve isolation. Within the past few days, a South Korean satellite spotted sections of a building that is suspected to be a part of their construction. Due to these aggressive stances, South Korea also criticized North Korea for repeating the actions of liaison office explosions a few years ago.
There also are speculations that the North Korean Army was found in Russia; according to South Korean spy agencies, 1,500 soldiers already are located within the Russian peninsula. The North Korean embassy did not respond to the allegations while South Korea, after receiving the news, summoned the Russian embassy to demand immediate withdrawal of North Korean Troops.
“The tension between North and South is gradually increasing due to a series of events,” Minseo Kim (12), South Korean citizen, said. “In the long term, Korea might experience further political division that only harms the citizens.”
