“School spirit” is often regarded as something that is common, but many do not realize that it is something difficult to achieve. It is especially tough for schools that are heavily focused on academics, like SIS. In order to overcome this problem, HSSC has hosted countless events to bring the school community together and for students to enjoy their school life.
“We wanted to bring out the fun in SIS because we think that most students are stressed,” Michael Jang (9), HSSC member, said. “By having students dress up for a different theme each day, they get to build memories with their peers.”
SIS students are often stressed from summatives, or for seniors, writing college applications. Therefore, most do not pay a significant amount of attention to the “fun” activities that the school provides. However, in order to supply a source of relief for students, HSSC focused on organizing a delightful event, namely spirit week.
“The spirit week made the heavy environment of school less pressuring,” Ellen Park (11), participant of the event, said. “I really enjoyed dressing up with my friends during the week. Watching a lot of people dress up made the school seem more festive and entertaining.”
The event was conducted from Oct. 28-Nov. 1 and included pajama day, sports merch day, character day, color day, and the Fall Festival. Some days, like character or sports merch day, allowed students to match their outfits with their friends while some days encouraged students to match with their grades. For example, during color day, freshmen wore white, sophomores wore blue, juniors wore brown, and seniors wore black.
Although some people doubted the success of spirit week, students from not only high school but elementary and middle school also attended school in different spirit week outfits each day.
“I am glad that a lot of people participated in spirit week,” Russell Jin (11), HSSC member, said. “The costumes were special and entertaining. We had a lot of students dress up to participate in the raffle, as we gave students free raffle tickets if they dressed up according to the theme.”
