Tottenham Hotspur FC renewed their contract with Son Heung-min for the following year, exercising their option to extend the contract for an additional year. For the past 10 years, Son has been a part of Tottenham FC, located in the UK, even serving as a captain for two years. While Son wanted a long term contract renewal, Tottenham only decided to extend the contract.
The transfer rumors started with Tottenham Hotspur News reporting that if a suitable offer comes while Son does not show improvement, Tottenham may transfer him this summer. Despite the extension of contract, speculations about transferring continued; some predict this extension is chairman of Tottenham Hotspur Daniel Levy’s scheme to secure Son’s transfer fee similar to his strategy with Harry Kane’s transfer.
“Rumors about soccer players changing teams is quite common,” Chris Ahn (10), varsity soccer player, said. “But for Son, I think that it is quite reasonable as his contract is ending in 2026.”
“[Son] is at the age where major transfer is necessary,” Brian King, former Tottenham scouting manager, said.
Due to the Bosman Ruling, Son can negotiate freely with overseas clubs without Tottenham’s consent or transfer fees. According to the Daily Mail, Barcelona, Mourinho’s Fenerbahce, and Atletico Madrid’s Simeone are interested in acquiring Son.
Son remaining in Tottenham for the following year also means that he could be leaving the team as a free agent (FA), with quite an uncertain future career.
“Although being a free agent is not the safest option, I think Son is competent enough to sign a contract with other great teams,” Jimin Son (11), varsity soccer player, said. “Son is such a competent player and has many teams that would want him.”
Despite the ongoing rumors, Son has maintained his composure. He mentions how he is grateful for the contract extension with Tottenham, especially because the English Premier League (EPL) is the dream of many young players. He displayed his dedication to future games, discussing future improvement and the responsibilities of his captain position.
