The Varsity Girls Basketball team competed at SIS for the KAIAC championship on Feb. 17-18. Ending the season in fourth place, the tournament marked their last games of the official season.
“Our standing was second until we fell short on the [season’s] last game with GSIS,” Hannah Park (10), varsity basketball player, said. “We were determined to win KAIAC especially because SIS basketball has a legacy of first place.”
SIS started their quarter finals at 9 a.m. with YISS. Despite YISS being promoted from the red division, which is a lower league, SIS struggled in the first quarter since they never competed with YISS this season. However, starting from the second quarter, SIS started scoring more points, ending the game strong with the final score of 47-39.
Progressing to the semi-finals, the next game was with SFS at 3 p.m. SFS, the season champion, won a victory over DSS in their quarter finals.
“We just hoped for the best,” Hannah said. “SFS was always a strong team, but this year, they were undefeated.”
During the first half of the game, SIS was only behind a few points, keeping up a close game. The game took an unexpected turn during the third quarter where SFS started to score lots of points while SIS struggled. Despite the best effort of Varsity players, SIS lost to SFS by 28-49.
On the second day of KAIAC, SIS competed against HHS for third place. SIS led the score from the first quarter until the end, taking the victory with a score of 41-24.
“The KAIAC tournament this year was rough as many of our players were sick or injured,” Kate Kim (11), varsity basketball player, said. “Although the results might not be as good as our previous years, we are still proud of what we accomplished.”
With this, SIS ended their official season with KAIAC 3rd place. However, there are two more friendly games and an AISA tournament held from Feb. 11-12 for varsity teams.
