The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) reported that the number of influenza patients has increased 13.7 times over the past four weeks, reaching their highest peak since 2016.
The current flu outbreak has particularly been prevalent due to two different factors: simultaneous circulation of two strains of influenza A virus–H1N1 and H3N2 and decrease in immunity among South Koreans. This rare situation has not only increased the possibility of infection, but also made it possible for individuals to be infected by both. Furthermore, the spread is exacerbated by the decrease in immunity among people, caused by the absence of widespread influenza activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. To prevent further spread of the disease, authorities are urging the public to get vaccinated ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, when people visit their hometowns to meet family and friends.
The outbreak towards the end of the winter break has affected the SIS community terribly, leaving many students no choice but to report absent due to flu symptoms and wear masks to school.
“The contagious nature of the flu also puts classmates, teachers, and family members at risk, making it essential to isolate during the contagious period to prevent further spread,” Ji Sun Choi, school nurse, said. “I recommend the students to inform the school nurse promptly if diagnosed with the flu or another contagious illness to ensure proper precautions are taken. It is also important to maintain good hygiene, including wearing a mask, especially in crowded indoor spaces.”
