The tensions between India and Pakistan escalated to a concerning degree, with strikes exchanged between the two nations in early May, resulting in casualties for both sides. Although US intervention established a ceasefire, the political crisis is far from over.
On April 22, 26 individuals were killed by a Pakistan-based group, with 25 of the victims being Hindu tourists. India accused Pakistan of supporting the group and other similar agendas against India, allegations which Pakistan denied. As a response, India launched Operator Sindoor on May 7, firing six missiles into Pakistan. The Pakistani government reported 11 fatalities and 78 injuries.
The US reached a fragile ceasefire between the nations with mediation on May 10. Violations were reported from both sides hours after the ceasefire agreement.
“Even during the British colonial time period, there was tension between the two regions mainly due to their religious differences,” Hyo Young Nam, AP World History Teacher, said. “There was tension between the Hindu and Muslim communities, but it escalated further after they gained independence.”
The political crisis between India and Pakistan was just the latest confrontation of a decades-long conflict over the Kashmir region that began with the partition of the two nations. Both Pakistanis and Indians claimed the area as their own since the division of India into Pakistan and India, resulting in multiple military conflicts since. Pakistan was a Muslim majority, while India remained Hindu-dominated.
“After the terrorist attacks that occurred recently, both nations have begun to cut resources and access between the countries,” Ms. Nam said. “They have cut visas, limited trade, and even water supplies.”
The Kashmir region is divided between the two countries, with a Line of Control dividing the territory. Throughout the 20th century, the two countries have constantly been in dispute over Kashmir, caught in a recurring peace-war dynamic. Despite the numerous treaties and agreements made to promote peace, India and Pakistan continue to face significant difficulties maintaining stable relations.
