The Trump administration announced on May 23 that Harvard University can no longer enroll international and foreign students. This move is part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to change policies at elite universities like Harvard.
This means that the international students currently enrolled in Harvard must either transfer or will be deported, and new international students will not be allowed to enroll.
The decision first came to be after the university refused to hand over detailed student visa information requested by the government.
Harvard called the decision “unlawful” and said it will work quickly to support its international students. Legal experts speculate that the university may take the issue to court. However, many fear that this matter may greatly hurt the school, as Harvard is known for its global student body. This ban can make it harder for the school to stay competitive and diverse.
“I was really shocked when I first heard of the news, especially because quite a few students from our school are either enrolled or are planning to enroll in Harvard soon,” Noella Shin (10), international student, said. “I think this issue will definitely impact many around me, and will also affect the school itself.”
