Son Heung-min, the South Korean captain of Tottenham, won the 1st trophy in the UEFA Europa League final on May 21. This marked Son’s long-awaited first career trophy after a number of close victories from previous tournaments.
The UEFA Europa League final took place in the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain which is one of the largest stadiums in Spain. The match was a tense showdown between the Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester United.
The Game was intense with both teams struggling to score points and dominate the game. But Brennan Johnson from Totanham made a first-half goal which led to the victory of the team. The game ended with a score of 1-0, marking the triumph of the Tottenham Spurs and ending their 17 years without a trophy.
This triumph was surprising not only because Son had a down season but also because Tottenham as a whole struggled. They were placed 17th out of the 20 teams in the Premier League and grappled with lots of changes within the members.
“Almost all star players of Tottenham left the team for throphe after their loss in the champions league,” Chris Ahn (10), Son Heung-min fan, said. “The fact that Son remained in Tottenham despite its struggles and maintained his trusted relationship with the team adds more value to his first ever trophy.”
Son is now officially the first Korean captain to lift up the UEFA trophy. He mentions in numerous interviews that he is grateful to be involved in such an honorable moment.
