Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) made history with a victory in the 2025 UEFA Super Cup, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Stadio Friuli on Aug. 14. This win marked PSG’s first-ever Super Cup trophy and showcased their resilience after coming back from a two-goal deficit in the final minutes of the match.
Many fans have been looking forward to this iconic match between last season’s winner of the UEFA Champions League and the winner of the Europa League.
Tottenham led the game 2-0 into the 85th minute. Centre-back Michy van der Veen scored in the 39th minute of the first half, and a header from centre-back Christian Romero in the third minute of the second half. Both goals, particularly from set pieces, were masterful attacks that precisely exploited weaknesses in the PSG defense. However, PSG made an unexpected comeback, with Lee Kang-in scoring the first goal after being substituted. His performance has brought back the energy and spirit of the team.
“Although I am a Tottenham fan, I was deeply impressed by PSG’s victory in the Super Cup as they came back from a two-goal deficit in the 85th minute of the game,” Tony Sohn (10), soccer fan, said. “Undoubtedly yet surprisingly, Lee Kang-in made the biggest difference as he subbed in and scored the first goal of PSG’s comeback. Personally, it was a surprise to see him score because I honestly have never seen him do anything for PSG, but his goal came at a pivotal time.”
After Lee’s strike, PSG continued to push forward. In stoppage time, Ousmane Dembélé delivered a cross from the right wing that was met by Gonçalo Ramos, who scored with a diving header to bring the match level. Ramos, substituted in the 77th minute, provided the equalizer within ten minutes of entering the game.
This triumph was monumental not just for PSG, who added the Super Cup to their last season’s quadruple wins, but also for Lee Kang-in personally. Seventeen years after Park Ji-sung’s appearance in the 2008 Super Cup, a Korean player once again took the stage, but this time, scoring a goal and successfully delivering in the shootout.
“It’s great seeing Korean players accomplish many remarkable achievements,” Edward Yoon (12) Varsity soccer player, said. “I hope their success continues to grow and inspire future generations of Korean athletes.”
