With the annual Terry Fox Run event at SIS hosted on Sept. 12 this year, students and teachers organized and participated in the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ in order to raise awareness for the community about the event.
The Terry Fox Run is a charity event aimed at raising funds for cancer research in honor of Terry Fox, a Canadian cancer research activist who ran marathons with an amputated leg. Every year, SIS dedicates several shifts to run laps for the fundraiser amongst different grades. This year, participants have begun to advertise for the event through the viral Ice Bucket Challenge.
By nominating different clubs amongst SIS to “respond” to the Ice Bucket Challenge within 48 hours, each club took turns in dumping ice-cold water buckets on each of their respective executive members.
The challenge played a significant role in collecting a variety of members taking part in the action. The challenge even spread to the counselors, exemplifying the dedication of the participants in bringing awareness to the entire school community.
“We participated [in the Ice Bucket Challenge] because it was a fun way to support an important cause and to bring awareness to the Terry Fox run here at SIS,” Nydia Hernandez, HS counselor and participant of the Ice Bucket Challenge, said. “I think it is a fun, easy, silly way to raise awareness. People respond to the more fun, catchy clips on social media, and this is just that. Plus, it is just nice to see students get involved and have fun at school.”
With profound efforts set forth by the numerous clubs at SIS, ranging not only from students but also staff members of the school in an attempt to garner recognition and gather fundraisers, the student body is hopeful on behalf of the entire school community for the success of this year’s Terry Fox Run.
