HUNTR/X, the K-pop group from the famous show called K-pop Demon Hunters, ranked first on the Billboard Hot 100. As the singers of HUNTR/X began uncovering the behind the scenes of the famous songs from the movie, the group faced backlash from one particular performance: the first “Golden” live performance at the Jimmy Fallon’s show.
Ejae (Rumi), Rei (Zoey), and Audrey (Mira) are the owners of the beautiful voices the fans complimented when the songs were trending after the movie release. Out of all the songs, “Golden” caught the attention of many fans because of its moving lyrics and the high notes of Rumi’s part, the main character of the show. However, when fans finally got to watch the live performance of Golden on the Jimmy Fallon Show, they were disappointed to see that the key of the song was lowered.
“I think the song itself got a lot of recognition for its high notes, which is why people were looking forward to seeing that live from the original singers,” Sylvia Lee (12), K-pop Demon Hunters fan, said. “But since they lowered the key, it didn’t meet [the audience’s] expectations and so some fans felt a bit let down.”
After the first live show of Golden, many fans commented on videos across platforms saying that they were waiting for the “original” version of the song. However, it turns out that the key wasn’t lowered just because it was difficult to sing. According to the JoongAng Daily’s post, Ejae was suffering from bronchitis, which made singing for her not only difficult but very dangerous.
“I didn’t know that she had Bronchitis,” Celine Kim (10), regular viewer of the Jimmy Fallon Show, said. “Without context, it really did seem like HUNTR/X was just trying to find the easy way out, but I am thankful that this context was provided as fans almost immediately started showing care for Ejae’s condition.”
Unfortunately, the situation seems that Ejae won’t be able to sing well until she makes full recovery. While some fans still await for the original version of Golden, many just hope that HUNTR/X is able to have fun with their media appearance despite Ejae’s condition.
