During the past week, students started noticing changes to the high school building while walking along the hallways. Something made them stop, look, and admire. What caught their attention? The new artworks were yet again another amazing project by the HS Design Department and student designers.
The design teachers and students have been involved in creative and engaging creation of artworks that can connect art and the student body. Unlike many other projects that they have done, this particular project was found to be very fun for not just the student artists but also the student body in general.
The project focused on “perspectives,” aiming to portray how 2D drawings can be mistaken as 3D depending on their size, layout, and perspective of the audience. On the second floor, for instance, students easily spotted colorful works of Bay Max, lipsticks, and other objects appearing to be 3D when in reality it is actually 2D.
“The artwork on the second floor that I created was a design assignment, which was to create a piece of anamorphic, pictures that look three-dimensional when viewed from an angle, artwork illustrated with color pencils for PTCs,” Ryan Jin (10), artist of Baymax, said. “My childhood memory of watching Big Hero 6 with my friends inspired me to recreate Baymax from the movie so that it felt like he was really in front of me.”
Behind every artwork, artists have a special story or event that has inspired them to draw certain things. The various opportunities presented by the HS Art Department teachers allow art students to express themselves through their artwork.
“The art projects are more than just displaying artworks for the student body,” Dyne Kim (12), NAHS president, said. “As artists, we are able to communicate our ideas, creativity, and values through our artwork, and these opportunities given by the teachers truly allow artists to express ourselves.”
Diving into the deeper aspects of these art projects that bring various forms of self-expression, Hanna Zheng, a design student, says more about what the project is aiming to accomplish. More than the current design work, there seems to be more for the high school to be excited about!
“In design, we do a lot of work that is physics and art based,” Hanna Zheng (11), student in design, said. “As a class, we like to focus on entertaining the eyes of students and we try to bring back popular topics or ideas.”
With more art projects and artworks to come, artists and teachers continue to appreciate the school community for engaging with various forms of creative expression.
