Welcome to Soomin2: The Search for Stars!
It’s February: the month when snow begins to thaw and when relationships start to blossom. Reflective of the month of love, we bring to you three songs that will leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling in your chest. These tunes and lyrics will make you realize that it’s not just a coincidence your eyes keep going to that special person. As always, take a few minutes to relax and indulge in a world full of expression and creativity with the stars of this month.
First up, an exhilarating pop rock song by The Cab, embodying the rapid heartbeats of those discovering love.
Intoxicated – The Cab
The softness of the band’s opening vocals might make you hesitate, thinking it’s no different from any other love song—but you know Intoxicated is different once the guitar and drums kick in on the second verse. The Cab feels that their special girl is “from another world” and that she can “take [him] to the moon,” since she can make them feel intoxicated with just her presence. The powerful high-reaching vocals and offbeat rhythm of Intoxicated distinguishes it from other typical too-sweet love songs. Part of The Cab’s second album, Symphony Soldier, Intoxicated represents the perfect blend of piano, guitar, drums, bass, and cello to make a love song you can rock hard to.
Second is a soothing track by Daughtry, relaying one’s undying feelings toward their loved one.
Cinderella – Daughtry
The plucking of the guitar strings in the beginning of the song will immediately lure you in, with a cheery voice joining in to create a soft, harmonized tune. Chris Daughtry, the main vocal of the band, describes his girl in an unfortunate situation—“ dressed in rags” and “scooping litter from the cats.” However, despite the state that she is in, Daughtry calls her his Cinderella, and reassures her that “whenever you need some shelter, we can stand under my umbrella together.” The constant rhyming of different words with the word “Cinderella,” the easy-to-pick-up tune of the guitar plucking, and the occasional electronic beats in the background will keep you humming along to the song without even noticing.
Finally, a slow and melancholic song illustrating one’s unreciprocated love.
Teardrops On My Guitar – Taylor Swift
Right away, from the first word, Taylor Swift brings up her special someone—Drew. The drums that softly play in the background blend in well together with the guitar that soon joins in, creating a mellow tone that will make Swift’s story relatable to you. She conveys her great love towards Drew, wondering, “if he knows he’s all I think about at night.” In the first chorus, as Swift continues to sing about how “he’s the reason for the teardrops on my guitar” and is “the only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star,” she is joined by a male voice for a tune that intertwines perfectly. Although this song is about Swift’s unrequited love, the mellifluous blend of voices and two instruments will make you want to fall in love.
Wishing you the best of luck with the one,
Sincerely,
– Soomin2
