As the first half of the semester comes to an end, SIS is approaching one of its annual traditions: the Fall Chess Tournament. Hosted by SIS’s Chess club, this annual tournament, spanning from Nov. 3-7, aims to determine some of the best chess talents who walk amongst our halls.
“I have been playing chess since I was 5 years old,” Alex Sung (10), chess tournament participant, said. “I always enjoy playing the game, and I think the chess tournament will be a good opportunity for me to have a friendly competition among my classmates and hopefully win a couple of games.”
While the chess club’s membership is exclusive to high school students, this tournament is special in that it allows middle school students to participate as well. With its welcoming atmosphere, it facilitates a friendly competition between students of all ages from grades 6-12, expanding opportunities for younger students while also providing the older students an opportunity to mentor their juniors.
“I don’t play a lot of chess,” Sungjin Park (10), new chess player, said. “I decided to pick it up because my friends play a lot, and they recommended it to me. I think the tournament will allow me to play chess with my friends while I can watch and learn from some of the more experienced and skilled players in our school.
Through the chess tournament, the club hopes to raise awareness about chess, while giving opportunities for students of all skill levels to participate in a friendly competition among the various age ranges in our school.
