A sequel to the 2016 Oscar Best Animated Feature Film of the Year, “Zootopia,” has entered theaters worldwide since Nov. 26, and the excitement around the franchise has skyrocketed across social media.
Pulling ahead with a confident margin at the box office from other contending films during the Thanksgiving weekend, “Zootopia 2” grossed $158 million domestically and $401.5 million abroad, second only to the previous Thanksgiving hit, “Moana 2.” Sources are already convinced that “Zootopia 2” will easily be another billion-dollar movie for Disney.
The movie picks up the story in immediate succession of the aftermath of “Zootopia,” starring the same protagonists: a small rabbit cop Judy Hopps and her fox cop partner Nick Wilde.
“Although the two movies take place in the same world, the plots are not connected,” Timothy Cha (11), viewer of both Zootopia films, said. “You can just watch ‘Zootopia 2’ and still understand everything about the movie. I would compare plot relevance to ‘Finding Nemo’ and ‘Finding Dory.’ It stars the same characters, but has a mostly unrelated plot.”
Both Zootopia films have achieved significant success, with strong reviews from audiences who have already seen them. Boasting a 95 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it has been one of the most talked-about movies in the past few weeks.
“Though these last couple of weeks have been quite busy, I am looking forward to watching ‘Zootopia 2,’” Russell Jin (12), avid cinema-goer, said. “Revisiting that universe would be quite nostalgic since the first installment came out when I was in elementary school. Perhaps I will not watch it with family this time, but instead with someone special in time for the holiday season.”
