After the assasination of the political activist Charlie Kirk in Sept. 10, 2025, his wife Erika Kirk has been making public appearances in interviews and events. Among the numerous interviews that Erika Kirk has taken part of, one of her most recent exchanges with Nicki Minaj has stirred controversy.  

In her interview with Niki Minaj, Erika Kirk suggested a further public appearance which was named as a “grief tour” in social media. The interview soon inflated in numerous platforms with users sharing their personal opinion about the situation.

The term “grief tour” was first used by those who criticized Erica Kirk’s frequent public appearances, speeches, and media interviews since the assassination of her husband. Although Erika Kirk has never mentioned the word “grief tour” herself, the public came to believe that it was quoted from her due to its prevalence in the media. 

Most users were unfamiliar with the idea of a tour based on sorrow; it was much more conventional for a widow to mourn for their passed husband in private. When the issue was settled, the public diverged into numerous different opinions.

AI generated videos of Erika Kirk on the “grief tour” or speaking crude opinions about her late husband Charlie Kirk are circulating online, causing confusion among individuals. Without prior knowledge of the situation, many users could believe the AI generated videos to be authentic. 

Development of AI technology has taken part in such unrecognized ploy. Still, such technological evolution tends to serve as a double-edged sword in society. While it can offer benefits to the society, it can also threaten the people with misinformation or fabrication of facts—the ongoing trend of Erika Kirk’s videos seems to exemplify such phenomena. 

With the widespread viewership of high-quality AI video of Erika Kirk on the stage of a supposed “grief tour” had many people believe that the tour was on-going. Despite Eirka Kirk never mentioning the term herself, it is now widely believed that she had coined the term “grief tour” herself. 

Technology has evolved to the point where it is undetectable without precautions. Even visual mediums such as videos or photos can appear so realistic that people cannot differentiate without looking very closely into it. 

The controversy surrounding Erika Kirk’s so-called “grief tour” reveals a much larger issue than public mourning; it reveals the growing issue of misinformation in the age of AI. Despite the original intent, the message has been deteriorated and sensationalized in different ways to shape the perspective of the viewers. Observing the situation, there seems to be a need for further precautions when using and developing AI related information.
