Drake made a comeback on May 15 with the release of his album ‘Iceman’ by OVO Sound and Republic Records, along with two additional follow-up albums. ‘Iceman,’ marking Drake’s ninth album, was released with his tenth and eleventh, ‘Maid of Honour’ and ‘Habibti’, respectively. The first solo project since 2023, the album sparked a frenzy among his fans on social media.
The three albums totaled 43 songs, a record-breaking number compared to his past albums. His releases of the three albums were praised for their different, unique styles, due to the distinct characteristics of Iceman’s “rap and hip-hop focused” theme, with Habibti portraying similar styles to R&B and Maid of Honour exploring “dance music-inspired” tracks
The simultaneous drop of the three albums led to mixed opinions among both his fans and critics about his decision, and to the historic record of being the most-streamed artist and album in a single day.
Despite all three albums playing a crucial part in Drake’s success and his historic achievements, fans were fixated mainly on ‘Iceman,’ the first album released.
“I was overwhelmed by the number of songs that were presented to the fans on the same day,” Jason Kang (11), avid Drake fan, said. “I was unsure of which album to listen to first, but I was immediately captivated by the unique beat and rhythm that was showcased in his songs in [Iceman].”
Despite the additional surge of success and fame Drake garnered from his release, there were also opposing viewpoints on his songs. Drake fans were enraged by the mediocre 4.8/10 rating Pitchfork gave Drake’s ‘Iceman’ album, which the publication described as a “missed opportunity”.
“I was a little disappointed by the quality of his songs, considering the hype that Drake had,” Alex Ko (11), Drake’s fan, said. “The beat was interesting, but I think I prefer his old style of song production. The new style seems to be missing the nostalgic aspect of his old hits.”
Though most fans were excited by the news of Drake’s comeback, those unfamiliar with his music were more captivated by the interesting, dynamic lyrics on his new album. Some listeners of his new album commented on specific verses within the new songs that stood out to them.
“I was immediately drawn into Drake’s new album ‘Iceman’, especially in his release of the song ‘National Treasures’,” Brennan Park (10), frequent concert attender, said. “I particularly enjoyed the line that goes ‘Ironic ’cause the Iceman was a nice man, now I’m hot and cold’ because of its catchiness and energy within his rapping.”
The release of Drake’s three new albums sparked greater interest amongst fans and critics due to his long-lasting rivalry with Kendrick Lamar, another famous American rapper and songwriter. Their rivalry spanned many years, capturing the interest of many with their heated diss tracks during the 2024 Super Bowl.
“I think Drake’s albums garnered more fame because of his continued battles between his song tracks and Kendrick Lamar’s,” Timothy Cha (11), frequent Kendrick Lamar listener, said. “Even as a Kendrick fan, his albums were interesting because of the unique style Drake portrayed in the songs.”
Although Drake’s unprecedented releases of his three new albums garnered mixed responses from both fans and critics, his shattering of numerous records is undoubtedly a remarkable feat.
