After the whirring of trimmers and the snips of scissors, the masterpiece is ready: a buzzcut. Famous for its short hair and almost bald appearance, the buzzcut has not always been popular. However, SIS has seen a recent increase in popularity of the buzzcut, with both students and teachers alike choosing to sport it for a variety of reasons, ranging from personal comfort, comedy, to deeper reasons. The hairstyle has evolved from being a simple, practical haircut to a symbol of confidence, individuality, and even community spirit within the school.
Some students wear buzzcuts as part of their identity, blending popular interests with personal comfort. For others, it represents a bold statement of self-expression, individuality, and freedom, especially in an environment where appearance often plays a significant role. The comedic appearance of the buzzcut also aided in its popularity boom, as it became a common trend for students to make wagers and set punishments for losing as a buzzcut. Each grade often had a few individuals who iconically wore buzzcuts, becoming “icons” of the buzzcut in SIS.
“I got my buzzcut because I lost a bet with my friends,” Justin Chen (10), sophomore icon of the buzzcut, said. “I thought it was a good choice since my hair tends to get tangled a lot, and since my haircut always made my friends laugh, I decided to get it. I also liked the way that I didn’t get as much acne since my hair didn’t cover my forehead as much, so I decided to make it my style.”

The buzzcut’s numerous benefits don’t end with only skin and style improvements. Some students and teachers found the buzzcut’s appeal in its easy maintenance and ventilation, appreciating how it saves both time and effort in their daily routines.
“Lifestyle-wise, there are benefits and drawbacks,” Christopher Van Swol, continuous buzzcut-wearer, said. “My hats fit better when my hair is shorter, and, particularly in the winter, I do not have to worry about my hair being messed up and stuck in a weird direction. Buzzcuts are also great for the summer because my head is kept cooler.”
“I first got a buzzcut because I heard that it was easy to maintain and comfortable to exercise with,” Philip Bliss (12), senior icon of the buzzcut, said. “But after wearing it for a while, I found that it was much easier to manage my hair, and it was cooler during the summer when I was working out, so I continued wearing it.”
Since the haircut is such a significant change to a lifestyle, many hesitate to make such a change. However, one student took the initiative to get a buzzcut in order to bring change into his life, while using the haircut as a way to de-stress from the academic pressures of being a high school student.
“College applications have made me really stressed out recently,” William Park (12), recent buzzcut convert, said. “I was tired of a lot of things in my life, and wanted to switch things up in order to make a change. My friends and family recommended me to get a buzzcut, and after getting it, it feels like a lot was lifted off my shoulders, and I recommend everyone to try getting a buzzcut once in their life.”

In the end, the short, spiky buzzcuts seen around the hallways at SIS aren’t just a simple hairstyle. With diverse reasons such as comfort, comedy, and personal style motivating the hairstyle, the buzzcut’s growing popularity shows the increasing number of students at SIS who are willing to step outside of traditional boundaries and display their individuality with pride.
