Over the 2025 Christmas weekend, a YouTube video posted by American content creator Nick Shirley exposed mass fraud in Minnesota daycares. The video investigated whether the public funding from the Minnesota official aid program, Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), had been put to correct use by the recipient daycares, sparking mass online speculation. Shirley’s accusations were only based on one government document, leading many viewers to doubt the validity of his claims.
“I was first attracted to the video because it was trending on social media,” Aaron Chin (9), global news enthusiast, said. “But after I did my personal research, I found out that a lot of the claims that the YouTuber was making were based on spontaneous accusations without giving the employees time to defend themselves.”
The Trump administration was quick to respond, freezing federal child care payments to five Democratic states, while also asking for stricter reporting requirements in order to benefit from federal funding. Due to such circumstances, the current governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, decided to drop his campaign after failing to duly address the problem, outraging the public over the mismanagement of government money.
“Minnesota should take more action against these accusations of fraud,” Joonho Kim (12), political enthusiast, said. “Since they already have a history of successfully prosecuting fraud, they should be able to do it now to prevent further misuse of government funds.”
While investigations are still ongoing, the state has been unsuccessful in preventing fraudulent withdrawals of government aid, and as the total sum of stolen cheques keeps on multiplying, it is urgent that both the state and federal government take action to address these issues and ensure that federal aid is being distributed to the estimated 12000 families across Minnesota that need childcare assistance.
