The varsity soccer team has seen many ups and downs in their conference results over the past few seasons, and this season is likely to be no exception. One of the main goals of the varsity soccer teams has been to secure a spot in the blue division. However, despite the boys’ first place conference finish last season, the combined boys’ and girls’ teams fell just short of promotion to the blue division for the third consecutive time.
This season, both the boys’ and girls’ teams are working even harder to reach the milestone. For the boys, there was a necessity for strong replacement for the six senior players in the season prior. Fortunately, over five underclassmen and additional seniors were able to step up and were selected as new members of the team.
“Coming into the season as a freshman, I know I still have a lot to learn and that there are guys ahead of me who have put in more time and experience,” Namhoon Kim (9), boys varsity soccer member, said. “My main focus is bringing good energy every day, working hard in training, and being ready whenever my name is called. Even if my minutes are limited, I want to contribute in little ways including things like pushing the tempo in practice, communicating, and supporting my teammates.”
Following a season full of hardships for the girls’ team, where at one point the team had seven players, the team is seeing some potential for growth. Six freshmen have worked hard to earn themselves a place on the team, a huge improvement from last year, where there was only one new freshman on the team.
“I think the freshmen have huge potential to make a big impact on the field this year,” Katie Hong (10), girls varsity soccer sophomore, said. “It is important to develop the younger players in the training, especially since they are the ones who will be leading the team a few years later.”
While the first matches of the season are yet to take place, there are high hopes for the varsity soccer team to finally earn their promotion to the blue division.
